Feature Objective

Assign our members with badges to acknowledge milestones and help reaffirm member behaviour by creating an instant positive feeling associated with fitness habits.

Badges work because they tap into something very human, we like being recognized for effort. The idea was to give members a moment of genuine acknowledgment every time they hit a milestone: not just a notification, but something visual they'd actually want to show other people.

The Feature Goals

1. Help users find the motivation to visit the gym.

Reward members with a badge every time they hit a fitness milestone, something directly tied to that specific achievement, not a generic trophy.

2. Make Users find their collected achievements

Give members a dedicated space in the app to see everything they've earned, and how close they are to the next one

3. Allow members to share their achievements with their network

Make badges shareable. We knew members would want to show off their milestones, so we built that in from the start.

My role

I led the Illustration, UI, motion design, and interaction design for this feature, the first gamification feature ever shipped at Basic-Fit. I collaborated closely with the Product Manager and the UX designer to make sure the visual language felt cohesive from the badge design all the way to the sharing screen.

The Badge categories

For the first release we focused on two categories that directly tied to gym attendance, the behaviors we most wanted to reinforce

Club Streaks represent the number of consecutive visits a user makes to the gym. Each visit adds to their ongoing streak, serving as a tangible measure of their dedication and consistency. However, if a user misses a day or skips a session, the streak is broken, and they must start again from zero.

This streak system is designed to encourage regular attendance and foster a sense of achievement as users strive to maintain their momentum. Whether aiming to beat a personal best or stay consistent with their fitness goals, each streak becomes a testament to their commitment. By reinforcing consistency, the feature helps users build lasting fitness habits and track their progress over time.

The Concept of the design: Travel the Fitness Universe
In Club Streaks, each consecutive gym visit upgrades your spaceship, starting from a basic craft and evolving into something more advanced the longer you stay consistent. Reach an entire year without missing a visit, and your ship transforms into a UFO, symbolizing your extraordinary dedication. This visual progression reinforces consistency and rewards users as they advance on their fitness journey. We chose a space travel metaphor to make streaks feel epic and aspirational rather than punishing when broken.

Club Visits track the total number of times a user has visited the gym. Unlike streaks, which focus on consecutive attendance, Club Visits count every gym session, regardless of schedule. Each visit contributes to a cumulative record of dedication and persistence over time. Whether users follow a structured routine or visit occasionally, every session represents progress toward their fitness goals. Club Visits celebrate long-term commitment and reinforce the value of consistently showing up.

Club Visits like building your Fitness Castle
With Club Visits, each gym session contributes to building a castle. Starting from a single tower, the structure grows into a larger fortress as users accumulate more visits. This visual progression reflects their dedication and provides a clear representation of their long-term commitment and progress.

Tracking  Success

To know if the feature was working, we set clear success metrics before launch, not after. Here's what we tracked and what we saw
